Effortless
2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:2-6
This week my wife told me I looked effortless when I was running and
I have been thinking about that comment ever since she made it. I also
have been thinking about this passage all week. Do you ever think about
all the effort we make in everything we do, sometimes successful and
sometimes not? At times we have probably heard people say, well, at
least you made an effort. But, does that really make us feel good about
it? What is effort anyway? The dictionary definition for effort is the exertion of physical or mental power.
A synonym for the word effort is "struggle", which might help you see
the deeper meaning a bit better. So, why do I have to struggle or make
an effort to be humble, gentle, patient and bearing with one another in
love. Well, first because God says we should. But second, maybe we
should view effort as a positive thing as verse three states in keeping
with the unity of the Spirit. With this unity comes a closeness with God
which in turn can create an effortless attitude of being humble,
gentle, patient and bearing with one another in love. I think the
reason my wife told me I looked effortless, was because while I was
running it looked so natural and not forced. I think we can take a
lesson from this scripture, that if we want to be all of these things,
we need to be in Unity with our Lord and Savior. We also need to be in
Unity with other individuals to have these actions be effortless. Make
every attempt to effortless.
Have a great weekend.
